A Few Digital Paintings From The Archive

Howdy,

I've been cleaning up my trusty old 'puter because I need to transition to a newer OS — and have gone through a decades worth of old files - deleting a ton and backing up MANY others.

It's been a time-consuming pain - made worse by the fact that I still LOVE my current PC and wouldn't even consider a transition if it wasn't going to be supported anymore.

-------------------------

The upside has been a nostalgic journey through ten years worth of old letters, images, and files, etc.

In that process I came across tons of old artwork — some that were finished and other "works in progress" that I ran out of steam on for one reason or another.

So today I'll share a few of those in no particular order.

^ ^ ^  Ages ago I found a photo portrait of an older woman and loved her sweet looking expression and decided to paint this digital portrait of her.

I got this far before moving on — but really enjoyed the process on this one.

^ ^ ^ Was watching the movie Flatliners and captured an image of Kiefer Sutherland during a scene and digitally painted this using it as a reference.

As I recall that original reference was monochromatic — but I was also kinda in that artistic "phase" at that time as well.

^ ^ ^ Found an awesome photo of a snail in a natural environment and really loved the lighting on it and tried my hand at capturing it in this digital painting.

"Jesus" - Copyright 2011 - Jephyr - All Rights Reserved

^ ^ ^ A photo study / digital painting of an image of a statue of Christ I found online.

In the original photo, the statue was either stone or concrete in natural light — but as noted above,  I was in a "monochromatic phase" around that time and went with this greenish color scheme.

^ ^ ^ This 2011 digital painting, I used as a reference just the "portrait" section of an amazing photo called "Strength."

BTW — I'd love to give credit to whoever took the original photo of the old man.

So if you know the photographer for this one or any of the other references I used (unless otherwise noted), please let me know who they are and I'd be happy to add a credit for them and link to their web-site(s) or social media etc.

That'll do it for today — although I may share more older images that I found in the archives down the road.

First Painting Of 2019!

Hi!

I just put the final touches on a new digital painting—my first of the new year.

It's a photo study of sorts because I used an awesome image I found on-line as a reference—but took a LOT of liberties with it—making it a light caricature as well—and adding some iconic/surrealistic elements.

I call this painting "Every Tribe - Every Tongue"—because, as I painted it, I thought a lot about the awesome gathering of people from all nations in heaven as described by John in Revelation 7:9-10.

I really enjoyed painting this one.

Thanks for stopping by and see ya again soon!

Tiger Study - Oil Pastel On Canvas

Hello,

As I wrote in my last post I'm currently working on more "real world" art — rather than digital art — and am emphasizing color media like pastel pencils and oil pastels — instead of just pencil sketching.

A few weeks ago I went out and bought some canvases and just finished my first oil pastel on one.

Working with oil pastels is giving me a renewed interest in working with oil paint again — something I haven't done in a few years.

Anyway — today I thought I'd share the latest — a tiger study from a photo that I'd previously done as a digital painting and shared on this blog a year ago.

Check out my blog post about that here <  link will open a new window.

New Pastel Pencil Work

Hi!

I've been doing a lot of digital painting and a lot of sketching — but was wanting to expand my "real world" efforts and get back to working with pastels.

But the pastel STICKS I have are more suited to working in larger formats and they can be messy and get dust every where — so they are are not as practical to take to a restaurant or coffee house to work with.

A while back I came across a video of a guy in England working with pastels pencils and as I shared a few posts ago — I ended up purchasing a pastel pencil set and two grey sketchbooks.

This is the set I got on Amazon:

Faber-Castel FC112136 PITT Pastel Pencils In A Metal Tin (36 Pack), Assorted

They are hardly dusty at all and I've found them perfectly suited to using out in public.

So — now it's been great to go back and forth between digital and the pastel pencils since then — and being able to work in color in my sketchbooks has been rejuvenating too.

Another great benefit is that a LOT more people have been approaching me when I work with the pastels — I think using color attracts more attention — and I have given out a lot of cards and have been getting a lot more requests for freelance work!

------------------------------

Anywho, today I decided to share three new pastel pieces — all created while working out in public.

I used photo references — and plan to do more and more of them.

^ ^ ^   I found a photo of a very beautiful young woman on-line and decided to make a my first pastel portrait in AGES of her — and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily this one came together.

^ ^ ^ Another photo study from an image I found on-line.

For some reason I struggled over this one a lot more — and it had to do in part with the tilt of her head — but as they say — "practice makes perfect" — so I plan to just keep doing more of these pastel portraits.

^ ^ ^ This last one is yet another photo study.

I've been working on a pencil sketch of a skull and ribbon and I picture birds and butterflies filling in the scene — but had never really studied the way a butterfly looked.

I thought the photo of this one was especially nice and really enjoyed creating my study of it.

------------------------

Well — that'll do it for today.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing my new pastels.

If so — would you please share this link/post with anyone you think might enjoy it.

I'm working hard at improving and it's rewarding when I know people are viewing my efforts.

So thank you very much in advance!

See you again soon!

Tiger: Digital Painting And Time-Lapse Video

Hi,

After creating several "real world" pastels recently — I had an itch to do a digital painting.

I'd kept a very cool photo I'd found of a tiger in my "image bank" and decided to make that my next piece.

I knew up front that painting all that fur and his stripes would make an interesting challenge — and as I got into it — that definitely proved to be the case.

But — after all the recent drawing and pastels — I found myself really going quickly —which is something I've been working on (getting faster that is).

I'll attach the a look at the finished painting and embed a time-lapse video of the painting process below.

Thanks as always for stopping by!

Sketchbook - Eagle Pastel By Jephyr

Hi!

Recently I picked up two sketchbooks with Grey Paper—rather than the plain white paper sketchbooks I normally use for sketching.

I also bought a Faber-Castel pastel pencil set and have been working with both the new sketchbooks and those pencils.

Thought I'd share one of those recent images—a photo study of an Eagle that I started yesterday and finished today.

Although I've used pastel sticks before—the pastel pencils have proved to be a bit more challenging to use.  In fact, I used some of my regular pastel sticks to finish this piece off—in part because I was finding it very difficult to get the whites "bright" enough.
